Meanwhile Young will be joined will be joined at Llandrindod Wells this weekend by East Lothian colleagues Scott Kennedy (Cockenzie & Port Seton) and Billy Mellors (Haddington) as they will be part of Scotland side looking to reclaim back the British Isles Home International series. All three garden county players will play in the same rink at second, third and skip respectively. The Scots open the series on Saturday morning with a mouth-watering clash against England followed by an afternoon clash with Wales. They finish the campaign off on Sunday morning with a clash against Ireland.
East Lothian’s hopes of going through the qualifying programme in the East section of the Scottish Counties Championship with an unbeaten record were thwarted when they suffered a shock 109-100 defeat from foot of the table West Fife at Inverkeithing BC last Saturday. However, despite the setback East Lothian were still confirmed winners of the section after Borders inflicted defeat West Lothian to grab runners-up spot. The cherry on the cake for the garden county is their knockout quarterfinal tie will be staged at a local venue, namely Haddington BC, next Saturday (July 9). The draw could have been kinder though as they will now face seven time winners Lanarkshire South who surprisingly only managed a surprise runners-up finish in the West section.
The garden county clocked up wins on two of the six rinks but the victories for the rinks skipped by John McCrorie (+10) and Glenn Blair (+4) were not enough to compensate for the defeats sustained by Alex Marshall MBE (-4), Scott Kennedy (-4), Brian Young (-7) and Craig Valentine (-8). “Very disappointed to lose but overall on the day West Fife played the better and big bowls when it mattered on a tricky surface and were worthy winners”, said team captain Scott Kennedy.
The Under 25 brigade of East Lothian hopes of landing a third Scottish Under 25 League Cup title were ended last Sunday when they made a disappointing semi-final exit to North section winners Grampian at Houldsworth BC in Wishaw. In the end, it was only a frustrating four shot defeat (126-122) but in truth the garden county ‘young yins’ had always been in the slipstream of their rivals from the opening ends. The combined defeat of the rinks skipped by James Burnett (-4), Gordon White (-3), Kieran Frame (-1) and Joe Mower (-1) proved too much to be covered by the wins delivered by Steven White (+4) and team captain Glenn Blair (+1). “Although very disappointed the players tried very hard and in the end just failed. It has been a great pleasure working with this group of players and we still have the Calder Cup and Renfrewshire Top Ten to look forward to”, said team co-manager Stevie Greenan.

Last Friday night saw the East Coast Carpets sponsored East Lothian Leagues enter the second half of its 18-match programme and in Division 1 it is all still to play for with only seven points separating the top five teams. Haddington remain in pole position and two points clear of the chasing field following their 4-4 draw at Gifford. Cockenzie & Port Seton remain in second after bagging a 4-4 draw at fifth placed Castlepark but it was a result more pleasing for the home side than the visitors. Defending champions Tranent moved into third place following their 6-2 win at relegation zoned West Barns then the defending champions followed that up with a hard fought 4-4 draw at East Linton in their rearranged fixture on Monday evening. EL-Coop is in fourth place following an excellent 6-2 away at mid table. Elphinstone blew the fight to avoid the drop wide open following their sensational 8-0 home win over now foot of the table Prestongrange.
Haddington’s slender lead in Division 1 comes under pressure on Friday night with the leaders facing a tough visit to second placed Cockenzie & Port Seton. Away on international duty means, Billy Mellors will miss the action for the visitors while the home side will have to do without the services of Scott Kennedy. EL-Coop has a great opportunity to keep the pressure on the leaders when they play host to Elphinstone while it is the same scenario for Castlepark when they entertain East Linton. Gifford look a much better outfit when icon figure Alex Marshall MBE is in it and he will be on duty again when they make the trip to struggling West Barns.
