Wins on the rinks skipped by Dougie Berwick (+16) and Alastair Russell (+2) delivered 4 vital points that matched the 4 dropped by the defeat of Tommy Young (-3) and Willie Wood MBE (-2). The match aggregate score would settle what had developed into a gripping encounter and a master scoreboard that flashed a final reading of 69-56 in favour of the ageing stars from the Alex Marshall Arena triggered the victory salute from the East Lothian camp. “Delighted to be in the semi-finals again and winning made the mammoth seven-hour car journey home from Livingston for many of the players in horrendous weather conditions just about bearable”, said team convenor John P Hamilton. Semi-final opponents on Wednesday March 14 at Whiteinch IBC in Glasgow are either Ardrossan or Inverclyde.
East Lothian IBC will have a double handed representation at next week’s British Isles Indoor Championships at Paisley Indoor Bowling Club in the shape of Mark Johnston, Willie Wood MBE and Derek Oliver in the Gents Triples and Peter Fallen, Davie Pryde, Alan Morgan and B J Smith in the Gents Senior Fours. World stage icon figure Alex Marshall MBE progressed through to the second round of the WBT Co-operative Funeralcare International Open at an absolute canter following a straight set win over English qualifier Danny Dennison in Monday’s first round action at Blackpool Newton Hall IBC. Dennison had in the weeks leading up to the event suffered a broken leg and arrived at the event announcing he required the aid of a stick and services of a wheelchair to participate. It was very apparent within a few ends that Dennison was in no shape to compete at this level and to his credit Marshall kept his concentration levels high and in just under one hour took both sets 16-0, 10-2. Number 4 seed Marshall was due back in action on Tuesday afternoon when he clashed with a fellow Scot in the shape of No.15 seed Jonathon Ross. All the action from Blackpool will be streamed live on the World Bowls Tour YouTube channel and can be viewed by clicking on www.youtube.com/worldbowlstour
