High expectations that the strongly formed West Lothian IBC partnership of star international figures Calum Logan and Neil Speirs would capture the gents Scottish 2Bowl Pairs Crown in the finals climax at Paisley – ended in early disappointment.
Meanwhile the star performer at the championships was 24 year old East Fife phenomenon Lesley Doig who made a successful defence of the ladies Singles title having in the earlier session captured the Junior Singles title for a second time. Doig – also a double winner of the outdoor junior singles crown – added to her 2012 Under 25 triumph with a 21-6 victory over fellow junior cap Carrie McLean of Auchinleck in 14-end whirlwind performance. When Doig returned to the carpet to contest the final of the Singles proper it was against her East Fife club mate Celia Smith and showing typical spirit at 6-2 down she stormed to 13 with a game-changing run of 1, 2, 3, 2, 3. Smith – mother of Bainfield player manager Gavin – was still in the picture at 16-12 down but Doig retained the title with a grandstand style finish of 1, 2, 1, (1), 1 that clinched a 21-13 victory.
John Fleming stepped up in impressive fashion from last season’s title winning junior singles win over Bainfield’s Daniel Gormley by etching his name on the main trophy with the Inverclyde star defeating Martin Williamson of Ardrossan, 21-13, in the final of the Singles proper.
