The major drama of the night involved Pearce versus McDougall at Bankton Mains with the latter breaking a 16-16 deadlock with a count of 3 to 19 on end 22.
Pearce carded a single to 17 then bringing the mat up the green conjured up a magic 3 – all close draws to the jack – to cross 20-19 then came under intense pressure on his own short mat to face game against.
Pearce thrilled the banking with a superb third bowl draw almost on the nose of the jack – it looked to be a sure fire winner; but McDougall – a former Champion of Champions – nailed it with a fantastic chap and lie to once again hold a winning 2 shots.
It was the last bowl saloon for Pearce and he rose above the pressures to brilliant draw first shot about on foot through the jack.
McDougall fired at the head but shook his own head in despair as he soon acknowledged that his attempt to escape to victory was going to sail past its target – high wide and handsome.
