East Lothian prospects, and high expectations, of putting up a decent showing in the East section of the Scottish Counties Championship for the coveted Andrew Hamilton Trophy has come under early pressure with a 20 shot away defeat (125-105) to arch rivals Edinburgh & Leith at Parkside BC last Saturday.Read More
The combined defeats of Brian Young (-18), Alastair Kennedy (-6) and Steven Morgan proved too much to be covered by the good wins delivered by Billy Mellors (+6), Scott Kennedy (+2) and Colin Glen (+1). East Lothian went into the clash in a confident mood and made an encouraging start to proceedings but gradually as the match wore on Edinburgh & Leith took command and it galvanised the home team while seemingly taking the steam out of the East Lothian effort. “Disappointing result as we made a really positive start to the match, but we need to take it on the chin and make sure we bounce back to winning ways in our next match”, reflected team captain Malcolm Higgenbotham.
The side is on recovery mission on Saturday against joint foot of the table Stirling County East at EL-Coop BC in Tranent (2pm start). At the time of this report going to press no team selection news was available from the East Lothian selectors.
Meanwhile the East Lothian Under 25’s bring the curtain down on their qualifying campaign in the East section of the Scottish Under 25 League on Sunday with a home fixture against Fife County at Castlepark BC. With chief rivals Edinburgh & Leith winning again last week it looks like they will end up topping the section with East Lothian now playing to make sure they finish second and a win against Fife would guarantee that. Team manager Gordon Pryde welcomes back current national junior singles champion Joe Mower of Haddington back into line-up while he hands seasonal debuts to Stuart Johnston of Winton and John Robertson of Tranent as replacements Jack Ferguson, Robbie Shields and Kieran Whitson. Mower will take up his customary position at skip while Johnston plays second in the rink skipped by Declan French. The team reads:- S.Robertson (C/P), P.Gray (C/P), J.Burnett (C/P), J.Mower (Hadd) skip C.Allison (E/L), J.Robertson (Tra), L.Gallagher (Dun), K.Simants (Dun) skip M.Kivlin (ELCO), S.Johnston (Win), L.Newlands (Hadd), Dec French (Elph) skip D.Young (ELCO), C.Gordon (Long), M.Martin (Tra), R.Cochrane (P/G) skip C.Brock (Hadd), R.French (Elph), D.Riva (ELCO), C.Darling (Hadd) skip D.Stevenson (ELCO), E.Leith (Aber), Dean French (Elphi), R.Thomson (Elphi) skip/capt Reserves: – R.Shields (ELCO), S.Mackie (ELCO), K.Yule (P/G), D.Peart (Long), C.Shaw (ELCO), K.Whitson (Tra)

Cockenzie & Port Seton spell as early season table toppers in Division 1 of the East Coast Carpets sponsored East Lothian League continues for the time being despite the leaders suffering a shock 5-3 home defeat at home to East Linton in last Friday nights action. Haddington moved menacingly to within two points of the leaders following their excellent 6-2 away win at Dunbar. High flying Elphinstone suffered a surprise crash landing when the newly promoted side lost 8-0 at West Barns. The first Tranent derby of the season ended in stalemate with visitors EL-Coop probably the happier with the eventual 4-4 scoreline. Castlepark enjoyed a good night and their 8-0 win away at Haddington A saw them jump a couple of positions in the table but the foot of the table home side is in dire trouble with a mere eight points accumulated from their opening five games.
Leaders Cockenzie & Port Seton welcome back influential figure Scott Kennedy for Friday night’s testing away visit to third place EL-Coop in the sixth round of fixtures in Division 1. International star Billy Mellors is expected to return to the Haddington line-up ahead of their home clash against Tranent while Elphinstone will be confident about getting back on a winning note when they host Dunbar. Castlepark are at home to West Barns and East Linton to Haddington A.
