East Lothian Co-operative Bowling Club young star Megan Kivlin continues to rewrite the history books after she capped an unbelievable last 12 months by being crowned the youngest ever winner of the British Isles Ladies Junior Singles title at the British Isles Junior Championships held at County Derry BC in Ireland last weekend.Read More
The 16-year-old, who last August became the youngest ever winner of the Scottish Junior Singles crown, was in sensational form all weekend, taking the title with a 15-9 win over the very talented Sophie Tolchard of England in the final.
“I’m over the moon,” she said. “It couldn’t have gone any better for me, starting with a good win (15-6) over Wales Ysie White in the semi-final. “I knew I would have to bring my A game into the final as Sophie (Tolchard) is a cracking player and thankfully I did”.
Also over the course of last weekend Kivlin was part of a Scotland Ladies Junior International Team that could not prevent England from retaining the British Isles Junior International series for a remarkable eighth consecutive year. The young Scots finished in runners-up spot after recording encouraging wins over hosts Ireland and Wales but unfortunately were no match for England suffering a heavy 56 shot defeat.
Before heading over to Ireland Kivlin at EL-Coop teammate David Young were part of a Scotland Young Bowlers Association International team that were successful against a strong Ireland Under 18 team with a hard fought 18-12 points victory over the course of three test matches played at Inchinnan BC in Renfrewshire.
Monday heralded the start of the Bowls Scotland Championships being staged at the Ayr Northfield complex and it brought a mixed bag of results for the East Lothian contingent of spectators. The Haddington duo of Joe Mower and Andy Burt delivered encouraging opening round wins in the gents Junior and Senior Singles respectively while Castlepark’s Janet Fairnie also progressed to the next round in the ladies Senior Singles with an accomplished 21-7 win over Nan Donald of Cardonald. West Barns held all the aces to register a convincing 17-9 win over Woodilee in the ladies Senior Fours. But it wasn’t all sunshine and roses for the early challengers from the garden county with disappointing first round exits made by Haddington’s Caitlin Thorburn and Andy Burt in the Mixed Pairs and Macmerry’s Jim Hogg, Ted Skillen, Bobby Scott and David Pryde in the gents Senior Fours. Play continues at the championships until Sunday.
East Lothian senior side return to competitive action on Monday in the Inter-County Senior League Cup for the Matt Purdie Trophy and the selectors have rung the changes ahead of the match against Stirling East at Haddington BC. No wins from four games played is a shocking and very worrying statistic for a well-equipped garden county side and with hopes of qualifying to the knockout stages now long gone it will take a lot of mental toughness to put their heart and soul into producing winning performances in their remaining fixtures. The following side has been announced: – D.Arnot, G.Gray, D.Pryde, Fallen skip J.Murray, B.Brunton, R.Strang, A.Russell skip K.Morgan, B.Davidson, J.P.Hamilton, A.Morgan skip B.Scott, J.Smith, D.Kennedy, T.Young skip D.Hogg, A.Jamieson, G.Smith, G.Cowan skip Reserves: G.Blyth, K.Borthwick, M.Gordon, A.McCue, D.Temperley, J.Hogg Any player selected who is unable to play is requested to contact team convenor John P Hamilton immediately on 07974 648401. All players report at Haddington BC by no later than 11.10am.
Cockenzie & Port Seton’s lead at the top of Division 1 table of the East Coast Carpets sponsored East Lothian Leagues has diminished to a single point advantage over title holders Haddington with four games remaining and there is still menacing pressure from third placed EL-Coop. Last Friday night’s top of the table clash saw Haddington make home green advantage count to deliver an emphatic 8-0 win over their title rivals. It was a golden opportunity for Cockenzie & Port Seton to cement themselves in a very strong position at the top of the table but Haddington blew the race for the title back open again with wins on all three rinks. Alister Kennedy and Billy Mellors skipped their rinks to good wins over Scott Kennedy and Steven Morgan respectively while Joe Mower carded a match winning double on his final end to edge out Derek Oliver. EL-Coop’s excellent 8-0 win away to relegation threatened Dunbar leaves them 12 points off the pace but they could still have a huge say in the destination of the title as they have the top two to play in their remaining fixtures. Castlepark confirmed their middle of the table status with a 6-2 win at home against Tranent while East Linton eased their relegation fears for at least the time being with a 6-2 home win over foot of the table Gifford. Aberlady and West Barns shared the spoils in a 4-4 draw with the result probably more pleasing for the home side than the visitors.
There is no league action on Friday night due to the current staging of the Bowls Scotland Championships but there is a full round of fixtures in all four divisions this coming Wednesday evening (August 2). Division 1 leaders Cockenzie & Port Seton play host to Aberlady while second placed Haddington also enjoy home advantage with Castlepark the visitors. Other fixtures are West Barns v EL-Coop; Dunbar v Gifford and Tranent v East Linton. All clubs are reminded that the starting time for the remaining evening games of the season is 6.30pm. All club secretaries are requested to ensure that all league and cup results, including shots aggregate score, are phoned into ELBA Match Secretary Keith Fender on 01620 860217 or via text message 07786 110416 immediately after each match.
