The Garden County Youths were in action last Sunday in the national finals of the Andy Houston trophy at Blacklands, Kilwinning where they faced Fife, Ayrshire North and West Lothian for the title. In the opening game the Garden County youngsters recorded an eight shot win over Fife whilst in the other game Ayrshire North defeated West Lothian by ten shots. The second fixture seen East Lothian face Ayrshire North who coped with the tough combination of strong winds and a heavy green better to defeat our youngsters by 20 shots. That meant that East Lothian had to try and get a large win over West Lothian and hope Fife could help them out by defeating Ayrshire North. Our youngsters gave it their best shot and ran out winners by twenty shots and Fife also got the win over Ayrshire North but only by six shots meaning that Ayrshire North won the title by sixteen shots. The Garden County youngsters have done themselves proud being Scottish runners-up, given that they lost six players from last year’s title winning team and this was a much younger squad. Youth convenor Stuart Thomson is confident this run will have given them plenty experience for next season.
