The youths of the club were the stars once again
last weekend as they won the Midlothian Tournament for a third year running on
Saturday. The team of Logan Kennedy,
Ethan Gillies, Lennon Rafferty, Aaron Betts (skip), Callum Henderson, Luke
Cowan, Beth Riva and Kieran Dodds (skip) lost their opening game 2-4 to
Midlothian 1 but bounced back strongly by defeating Midlothian 2 by a 6-0
scoreline. In their next fixture the young
ones got themselves back into contention with an excellent 5-1 success over
Abbeyview. They then romped to another 6-0
victory, this time over East Fife, to set up a winner takes all clash in their
final game against Bainfield. A really
strong first couple of ends saw the Garden County Young Yins lead 11-0 and they
never looked back and ran out comfortable 6-0 winners to clinch the tournament
with 25 points out of a possible 30 allowing Captain Beth Riva to collect the
trophy.
There was more progress for our youths on Sunday when Beth, Kieran, Aaron and Logan progressed from trial one to trial two in the SYIBA Under 17 selection process. Callum Henderson and Lennon Rafferty just missed out on moving to the next stage despite good performances on the day and there will be other opportunities for these talented youngsters.
Our youths return to league action this Saturday as
they continue their title defence when they again travel to Midlothian. The same team as was successful in the
opening game has been selected which reads:
Rory Glen, Sam Niven, Callum Henderson, Aaron Betts (Skip)

Luke Cowan, Daniel Kivlin, Logan Kennedy, Kieran Dodds (Vice Captain))
Development Rink – Kara Johnstone, Daniel Gillies, Ryan Anderson & Sam Niven
Reserves – Jake Watling and Liam Fairgrieve.

There was final hurdle defeat for both the ladies
and gents fours last week in the national play-offs at Lanarkshire. The gents four of Jamie Higgins, Scott
Kennedy, Billy Mellors and Derek Oliver opened up with a 23-13 win over
Balbardie on Saturday before defeating Ardrossan by the same scoreline on
Sunday morning to set up a quarter final against the equally strong Midlothian
four of Ronnie Duncan, Billy Peacock, Davie Peacock and Colin Walker. The game was close over the first few ends,
however, it was the Midlothian four who were the more consistent over the
remainder of the game and eventually ran out 10-21 victors. The ladies had opened up with an excellent
19-17 win over host club Lanarkshire before comfortably defeating Midlothian
23-8 to set up a quarter final against Lorraine Craig’s Balbardie four. Similar to the gents the game got away from
the ladies in the middle, however, they fought back but could never quite lay
the count they required to hit the front and were eventually defeated
17-20.
The gents return to Premier League action this
Saturday when they entertain Abbeyview in the first game of the second half of
the league. The gents will be looking to
win all five games and hope that Blantyre slip up along the way to have any
chance of progressing form the section.
The team selected is the same as defeated Lanarkshire at home two weeks
ago and is as follows:
Mark Johnston, Dougie Berwick, Stuart Thomson and
Joe Mower (Skip)
Aaron Betts, Jamie Gordon, Dean Riva and Derek
Oliver
Jamie Higgins, Danny Stevenson, Steven Morgan and
Scott Kennedy
Lessel Middler, Calum Darling, Lewis Betts and Billy
Mellors
The Garden County Senior brigade were in action last
Wednesday when they travelled to face Midlothian to try and avenge the defeat
they suffered earlier in the season.
East Lothian got off to the better start and after five ends had built
an eight shot lead which they managed to increase to fifteen shots by the tenth
end of the game. The home team fought
hard to get back into the game over the remainder of it, however, the Garden
County Auld Yins held firm and managed to keep their Midlothian opponents at
bay, eventually succeeding by a 60-57 scoreline. The result puts East Lothian top of the
section by two points and over fifty shots from Midlothian and with only five
games remaining and three of these at home they must be seen as strong
favourites to progress from the group.
There were three winning rinks against Midlothian
with Tommy Young’s rink producing a five shot win and the rinks of Graham
Robertson and Willie Wood MBE both winning by three shots whilst the rink
of Andy Burt finished eight shots
down. The next opponents are bottom of
the table Tweedbank who were due to visit the Alex Marshall Arena on Wednesday for
which the following team was selected:
P Fallen, D McGill, G Gray & T Young (Skip &
Captain)
L Middler, R Steele, D Berwick & G Robertson
B J Smith, D Pryde, A McKenna & A Burt
R Douglas, B Johnston, A Russell & W W Wood MBE
5th rink is A Valentine, R Maguire, J Neilson & J
