Midlothian ladies travel the road and the miles to Dundee today and hope to be on song as they bid to capture the indoor bowls Scottish Cup at the expense of Auchinleck in a final that promises to be a thrilling encounter between the two premier league clubs.
Auchinleck are the defending champions whilst Midlothian seek their first Knock-out Cup title success in the short four year span of the event however in the longer running League Cup the form history shows eight celebration at the Dalkeith stadium to the five of the Ayrshire giants. Both finalists competed in the recently completed B section of the Premier League and while Auchinleck finished four points ahead of Midlothian the two head-to-heads resulted in home wins making today’s neutral venue outcome difficult to predict. The Midlothian camp is on an end of season high with recent British Isles title wins in the Junior Singles and Fours while the presence of personality figures in the shape of Stacey Laidlaw, Kelly McDougall, Gaynor Duncan, Sandra McLeish and Scotland’s most capped player Jeanette Conlan is a further boost to team morale. Shona Johnstone is an inspirational team captain and she is confident that the following line up will deliver a strong performance and hopefully one good enough to bring them Scottish cup glory. Rink 1. Sandra Muir, Norma Shillinglaw, Grace McGregor, and Sandra McLeish. Rink 2. Susan Liddle, Elaine Young, Kelly McDougall, and Stacey Laidlaw. Rink 3. Dorothy Millar, Annette Wilson, Anne Rutherford, and Jeanette Conlan. Rink 4. May Brownlee, Jeanette McVicar, Gaynor Duncan, and Shona Johnstone.
East Lothian also have a date with title destiny this weekend with the ‘garden county’ bidding to capture the Headwell Mixed Team Championship at the expense of Perth in tomorrow’s final at the Dunfermline venue. The records show that East Lothian’s only title celebration in this long-standing event came in 1994 so hopes are high that the long gap will be bridged by a team that features John McCrorie, Muriel Hamilton, Brian (BJ) Smith), and Scott Mackintosh as the four skips. John Hamilton is a late call up in place of the injured Alan Davidson. Gents: John Carpenter Jnr, Matt Osborne, Stuart W Thomson, and John McCrorie. Ladies : Margaret Devine, Irene Combe, Alicia Irvine, and Muriel Hamilton. Seniors: Lessel Middler, Gordon McCathie, John Hamilton, and BJ Smith. Mixed: Gillian Mackintosh, Rosemary Mackintosh, Stuart Betts, and Scott Mackintosh.
