are in celebration mode having signed off their season of competition in the Edinburgh Bowling League with a commanding victory over Parkside in the final of The Edinburgh Cup sponsored by the Gifted Retail Shop of 78 Raeburn Place in the capital. LRF came into the final having already been crowned champions of the League so were fired up by a strong ambition to emulate the inaugural League and Cup double achieved by Hillside last season.
“Winning the league title a few weeks ago was a dream occasion for the club and now it is great that our team of eight have added the Cup to win both major honours of the EBL”, said spokeswoman Nicola Barclay. Parkside came into the Cup Final with the advantage of playing on their own green but that type of situation can backfire as on this occasion with LRF holding the upper-hand on both rinks – one in commanding style and the other by the narrowest of margins. The rink skipped by Scotland cap Gillian Mackintosh and comprising Diane Crolla, Alvis Dickson, and Diane Bell produced an awesome performance that set the LRF support alight with an 18-4 win over Mary Salvona. Salvona and her front-three of Betty Rodgers, Helen Creamer, and Margaret Scuoolbraid were restricted to four singles over the 17-ends while 10 of their own losses were singles with LRF also counting one four and two doubles. Barclay found life much different in a real humdinger of a game that saw her skip Sheila McIntosh, Eileen Mitchell, and Rosemary Mackintosh to a 14-13 win over Mai Smith, Ros Tait, Jackie Young, and Janice Clayton. Peels was called at 7-7 and the battle for supremacy continued in ding-dong fashion then with Parkside carding a double to nose into a 12-11 lead LRF tipped the scales in their favour with Barclay and Co carding a magic 3 to stand 14-12 up playing the last.
