The Scottish Champions of 2006 and 2011 completed a glorious treble in the ladies 4Bowl Pairs event when parading their exciting brand of skills to thrilling effect in front of an appreciative crowd attending the climax to an array of national championships. Their hard fought win over Rosie Wood and two times champion skip Cathy McIntosh of Stonehaven in the semi finals was followed by a magnificent triumph over Anne Marie Taggart and Laura Welsh of Whiteinch in the final.
The cheerleaders of the Bathgate based Balbardie domestic champions were enthused by a positive start to the semi final that fired Leitch and Craig into a 6-2 lead after four ends however a change in landscape saw them trail 9-8 after 11 ends. That period of growing menace was answered in spectacular fashion as Leitch and Craig responded to the pressure with a purple patch spell that accelerated them into a 20-12 lead having included the highlight moment of a magnificent count of seven. With five ends still to play and a place in the final in sharp focus the experience partnership of international status kept a steady nerve to clinch a satisfying 24-18 victory. Expectations were high entering the final however the opening exchanges produced a degree of nervous tension with Balbardie 7-3 down after seven ends.
End eight however proved to be a game changer of great significance with Balbardie carding a dynamic count of four shots that triggered an explosive burst of 2, 1, 2, 2, (3), 2, 2 that blasted them into an 18-10 lead over a reeling Whiteinch opposition. With the national crown firmly in their grasp with six ends to play the champions in waiting were rocked by the loss of a four however the timely warning was well heeded and a finishing run of 1, (1), 1, (1), 1 clinched a 21-16 victory. “we are absolutely over the moon at bringing another national title to our club Balbardie and the county banner of West Lothian and the extra bonus is that Lorraine and I can now look forward to having a crack at the British Isles title”, reflected a beaming Leitch.
The 136th AGM of the West Lothian Bowling Association held at East Calder BC saw Ian McGill of the host club elected to the position of President and joined by new faces in Tommy Sutherland of West Calder (V-P); Ken Lawrie of Mid Calder (Treasurer), and Keith Mitchell of Buchan Park (Secretary). Davy Doyle of East Calder BC was elected to serve the newly created management committee office of match secretary.
A minutes silence in respect of all members that had sadly passed away in the past year was followed later by tributes paid to prominent West Lothian figures of wider fame in the shape of Marshall Sneddon of Deans, Dennis Cavanagh of Uphall Station, Tom C Mulholland of Bridgeness, and Linda Brennan of Middleton Hall.
