Speirs – also Master in 2002 and finalist in 2001 and 2007 – was parading his skills at Bathgate High but the 39 year old international star from Kirkliston ended on a low having crashed out to a 21-17 defeat.
A close call for four seeds saw Darren Pearce the No15 from Kirkliston edge a 21-20 thriller against Graeme Byrne of Linlithgow and Brian Craig the No 9 from Glenmavis survive a 21-19 battle against Mark Graham of Linlithgow. Glenn King – last year’s finalist and the No 13 seed from West Calder edged a 21-19 thriller over Willie Clark of Blackburn while Bryan Cooper the No 12 seed from Bathgate progressed at the 21-17 expense of Whitburn challenger Alex Fraser.
A night of dramatic nail-biting climaxes saw six other games go right down to the 21-20 wire with Alistair Stenhouse of Linlithgow piping Jamie Edwards of Broxburn and Walter McDougall of Glenmavis edging David Gilliland of Bankton Mains.
Stuart Ford of Armadale breathed a huge sigh of relief against former colleague Robert Jones of Watson Memorial; also Andy Mitchell of Pumpherston against Alan Ure of Kinneil; Alex Main of Armadale against teenager Ryan McCormick of Bathgate; Andrew White of Armadale against Kevin Norris of Bankton Mains. Alec Allan of Newbridge – finalist in 2013 – knocked out first round giant killer Ian Greer ( also Newbridge), 21-16, while Calum Black of East Calder beat his Hamilton Trophy colleague Andi Gray of Kirkliston, 21-13.
Frazer Muirhead of Uphall Station – the recent winner of the inaugural One End Singles Shoot-Out – made good headway into tonight’s third round.
Two prominent Seniors – both from Armadale – in the shape of Bob Mackay and Gordon Scott made an earlier than expected exit – Mackay losing 21 –4 to Steven Alexander of Ratho and Scott, 21-11, to Tam Hamilton of Linlithgow.
